Installing Access Manager


To use the Internet High Speed Access service or the KeyPak High Speed service, you need to install Access Manager software on your system. To install the latest version of Access Manager, follow the instructions on this page that apply to your situation.

Note for users of Windows 2000 and NT: the latest version of Access Manager (1.5a) requires Service Pack 1 for Windows 2000 and Service Pack 6a for Windows NT. You can download the latest service pack here.

Instructions For Windows Users:

If your computer isn't connected to the Internet, and your operating system is Windows 95/98/NT:

Install Access Manager from the CD included in your starter kit. The version of Access Manager on your CD is compatible with your operating system, but once you have access to the Internet, you can follow the instructions below to upgrade to the latest version of Access Manager if you like.

If your computer isn't connected to the Internet, and your operating system is Windows ME:

The version of Access Manager on the CD included in your starter kit will not give you access to the Internet. To install the correct version of Access Manager on your computer, you'll need to first establish a dial-up connection to the Internet, then download Access Manager v.1.5a from the Internet. Before you start, make sure that you know the settings for connecting to your local dial-up location. You may also need your original Windows ME CDs or diskettes.

  1. If necessary, install your modem by following the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Click Start, click Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, then click Dial-Up Networking.
  3. Double-click Make New Connection, then click Next.
  4. Type a name for the connection, for example Business Internet.
  5. If necessary, configure your modem, then click Next.
  6. Type your local dial-up number (long distance charges will apply if you dial an out-of-area code number). Click here to view a list of dial-up phone numbers., then click Next.
  7. Click Finish to save your Business Internet connection.
  8. Double-click the new connection icon in the main Dial-Up Networking window.
  9. Type your User ID and password (both are listed in the Welcome letter you received with your starter kit), then click Connect.
  10. When your Internet browser opens, go to the ftp://download.sympatico.ca/BBI/BBI-Win-En15a.exe site to download Access Manager version 1.5a. When the Save As window opens, download (save) the file to the root of your C:\ drive so that it is easy to find. Also make sure that you have the floppy disk with the Ethernet card software that came with your Business Internet High Speed kit.
  11. Double-click the file that you downloaded in Step 10.
  12. Click Install, then click Next.
  13. After the software has been installed, click Finish to restart your computer.
  14. Refer to the manual included in your starter kit to learn how to correctly configure your Internet connection.

If your computer isn't connected to the Internet, and your operating system is Windows 2000:

The version of Access Manager on the CD included in your starter kit will not give you access to the Internet. To install the correct version of Access Manager on your computer, you'll need to first establish a dial-up connection to the Internet, then download Access Manager v.1.5a from the Internet. Before you start, make sure that you know the settings for connecting to your local dial-up location. You may also need your original Windows 2000 CDs or diskettes.

  1. If necessary, install your modem by following the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Click Start, click Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, then click Network and Dial-up Connections.
  3. Double-click Make New Connection. The Network Connection Wizard starts.
  4. Click Next. The Network Connection Type screen appears.
  5. Choose Dial-up to the Internet and click Next. The Network Connection Type screen appears.
  6. Choose I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN).
  7. Choose Dial-up to the Internet and click Next. The Internet Connection Wizard starts.
  8. Click Next to accept the I connect through a phone line and a modem option. A screen appears, prompting you to perform Step 1 of 3 of the Internet account connection information procedure.
  9. Type your local dial-up number (long distance charges will apply if you dial an out-of-area code number). Click here to view a list of dial-up phone numbers. Select your country/region name from the list and click Next. The Step 2 of 3 screen appears.
  10. Enter your user name and password (both are listed in the Welcome letter you received with your starter kit), and click Next. The Step 3 of 3 screen appears.
  11. Type a name for the connection (example: Internet High Speed) and click Next. The Set Up Your Internet Mail Account screen appears.
  12. Click No to indicate that you do not want to set up your mail account at this time.
  13. Click No.
  14. Click Finish.
  15. In the Network and Dial-up Connections window, double-click the new connection icon.
  16. Type your user name and password and click Connect.
  17. When your Internet browser opens, go to the ftp://download.sympatico.ca/BBI/BBI-Win-En15a.exe site to download Access Manager version 1.5a.
  18. Download the file to your Desktop so that it is easy to find. The size of the file is approximately 5.7 MB.
  19. Double-click the file you downloaded in Step 15.
  20. Click Install, then click Next.
  21. Once the file is installed, click Finish to restart your computer.
  22. After restarting your computer, double-click the Internet High Speed icon on your desktop, and double-click the Create New Profile icon. Follow the directions on your screen to create your user profile.

If your computer isn't connected to the Internet, and your operating system is Windows 95/98/NT:

The latest version of the Internet High Speed Access Manager for Microsoft Windows is v1.5a. This new version is required for Internet High Speed Access / KeyPak High Speed solution customers who intend on upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows ME. To install v1.5a, go to the Internet High Speed Downloads page and follow the instructions.

If you're already using the Internet High Speed Access service / KeyPak High Speed solution, and you want to upgrade Access Manager without upgrading your operating system:

  1. Click here to download Access Manager version 1.5a. Download the file to the root of the C:\ drive so that it is easy to find. Also make sure that you have the floppy disk with the Ethernet card software that came with your Business Internet High Speed kit.
  2. If the current version of Access Manager is installed, it will need to be uninstalled. Although Access Manager will uninstall automatically when you double-click the version 1.5a icon on the desktop, it is preferable if you manually uninstall your current version of Access Manager. To manually uninstall Access Manager:
    • Click Start, click Programs, click Advantage Internet High Speed, click Access Manager, then click Access Manager Uninstall. You are prompted to select the files you want to remove.Remove Programs Window
    • Click Yes to All. A message prompting you to confirm your selection opens.Remove Shared File? Message
    • Click Yes.
    • Follow the remaining instructions.
  3. Double-click the file that you downloaded in step 1.
  4. Click Install, then click Next.
  5. After the software has been installed, click Finish to restart your computer.
  6. After your computer has restarted, double-click the Internet High Speed icon on the desktop. Double-click the Create New Profile icon.
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen. When you are asked for your User ID and password, type the User ID and password on your Welcome letter.

Note: Although Access Manager uninstalls automatically whenever a new version of Access Manager is installed, it is preferable if you manually uninstall your old version of Access Manager before installing the new version.

Instructions for Power Macintosh Users:

The latest version of Access Manager for Macintosh users is v1.11. This new version of Access Manager supports Mac OS 7.6.1 through 9.1. If your operating system is Mac 9 or later, you must download and install the latest version of Access Manager to get access to the Internet. If your operating system is a version earlier than 9 the version of Access Manager on your CD is compatible with your operating system, however you can follow the instructions below to upgrade to the latest version of Access Manager if you like.

If your computer isn't connected to the Internet, and your operating system is Mac OS 9 through 9.1:

The version of Access Manager included in your starter kit will not give you access to the Internet. To install the correct version of Access Manager on your computer, you'll need to first establish a dial-up connection to the Internet, then download Access Manager v.1.11 from the Internet. Before you start, make sure that you know the settings for connecting to your local dial-up location. You may also need your original installation CDs or diskettes.

  1. Ensure that Open Transport is installed. To configure a dialup connection with Macintosh, you must first have the TCP/IP, PPP or Remote Access, and Modem control panels installed on your computer. If you do not have them installed, you will need to install them from the Mac OS CD that came with your computer.
  2. Set up Open Transport. Click the Apple button in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Select Control Panels, then select TCP/IP in the sub-menu. If TCP/IP is not active, activate it by clicking Yes.
  4. Click the File menu, then select Configurations. Click Duplicate, then enter a name for the dialup connection, for instance, Dialup. Click OK.
  5. Click Make Active.
  6. Click the menu next to Connect Via: and select PPP.
  7. Click the menu next to Configure: then select Using PPP Server.
  8. In the Name server addr. box, enter the primary DNS and secondary DNS numbers. These numbers are on the dialup information page.
  9. Close the TCP/IP window, and click Save to save the configuration.
  10. Click the Apple menu.
  11. Select Control Panels, then select PPP (Remote Access if you have an iMac or Mac OS 8.5 or later).
  12. Enter your User ID in the Name: box and your password in the Password: box. Your User ID and password are printed on the Welcome letter included in your starter kit.
  13. Enter the area code and the dial-in phone number for the service in the Number: box.
  14. Close the PPP window and click Save to save the configuration.
  15. Click the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then select Modem.
  16. Click the menu next to Connect Via: then select the port that your modem is connected to.
  17. Click the menu beside Modem, then select your modem in the list.
  18. Close the Modem window and click Save to save the configuration.
  19. Click the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then select PPP (or Remote Access).
  20. Click the Connect button to connect to the Internet.
  21. When your Internet browser opens:
    • Bell Internet High Speed and KeyPak customers type ftp://download.sympatico.ca/hse/Sym-Mac-En111.hqx to download Access Manager version 1.11 .
    • DSL Teleworker customers type ftp://download.sympatico.ca/nexxia/Nex-Mac-En111.hqx to download Access Manager version 1.11.
  22. Download the file to your Desktop so that it is easy to find. The size of the file is approximately 5.7 MB.
  23. Double-click the Access Manager file you downloaded.
  24. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the Access Manager installation.
  25. If you want to upgrade to the latest version of Access Manager:

    You can install v.1.11 if you want to upgrade. However, if your operating system is an earlier version than Mac OS 7.6.1 your current version of Access Manager is compatible with your operating system.

    To install v1.11, go to the Download Access Manager page, and follow the download instructions for Macintosh users.

    Note: It is preferable if you manually uninstall your old version of Access Manager before installing the new version.
