 Web Site Hosting

Overview | BUILD YOUR SITE | Preparing images | Advanced functions

Step 3

This step assumes you have already completed STEP 1 and STEP 2, or have already made your own Web page and need to know how to upload your pages to the Business Internet Web Site Hosting service.

Note: To upload your Web pages, you will need your Website Hosting username and password, which were assigned to you when you registered with the Business Internet service. These are not the same username and password used to connect to the Business Internet service.

We assume you have already chosen an FTP client and know how to use it. An FTP client is software that is designed to transfer files from one computer to another. FTP software is not included with your Business Internet software. However, it is easy to find FTP software on the Internet. See our Resources page for more information.

If you do not have, or know how to use any FTP software, you can use the Netscape Composer component to upload your web pages. Using Netscape is handy because you don't need a separate piece of software, but you can't create sub-directories with Netscape Communicator.

Please read through these instructions first and print this page before starting.

To upload your Web page using FTP software:

  1. Connect to the Business Internet service as you usually would, with your modem.

  2. Start your FTP client software.

  3. When prompted to enter a Host (ftp Internet address), use your company's Domain Name, in the form of www.yourCompany.ca

For User ID enter your Business Internet Website Hosting username; and for your Password enter your Business Internet Website Hosting password; finally, for Directory or Remote Directory enter /docs.

  4. Once you have made an FTP connection to your Website directory, you will upload your prepared html file(s) -- remember the filenames must contain the extension ".html" or ".htm". Please note that all your Web page files must be placed within the docs directory, or they won't be viewable.

  5. Once you have transferred your file to your docs directory, exit your FTP software and start your browser (such as Netscape Communicator).

  6. Enter your Domain Name, in the form of www.yourCompany.ca, in the Location box, then press Enter to view the first page of your Web site

Next Step:
Deleting, changing or adding Web pages in your Web site.
